Text Box: Project Summary:
Reinforced concrete pavement was placed on Allequippa and Terrace Streets in the City of Pittsburgh, PA because of concerns regarding potential problems with a regular schedule of city bus traffic on a very steep grade. Upon completion of the project, unusual crack patterns developed as seen in above photos, and QES was contracted to investigate the pavement.

Using an array of state of the art investigative techniques combined with material testing, it was determined that construction related defects resulted in the observed performance problems. Three concurrent activities were undertaken, review of project design and construction documentation, field investigation, and laboratory testing. Finally, all data compiled was analyzed to determine the cause of, and a feasible solution to the problem.
Field Testing included Distress survey, Deflection Testing of slabs, joints, and cracks by FWD, Reinforcement location by Ground Penetrating radar, rebar locators, coring & sampling. Laboratory testing included split tensile, compressive strength, and petrographic analysis of concrete specimens. Base and subgrade material were classified and graded to verify consistency with design assumptions. Pulse velocity readings were used to supplement the core sample results.
